Job Description:
Job DescriptionDraws and collects blood samples from patients,
verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
May prick finger to draw blood. May conduct interviews, take vital
signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at blood
bank. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to
perform the functions of the job.POSITION PURPOSE The primary
function of the Phlebotomist is to obtain specimens from properly
identified patients (two identifiers: name and date of birth)
including infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatric
patients in all areas of the hospital. Must be able to perform
venipunctures as well as capillary punctures and heel sticks. Have
knowledge of various needles and devices. He/she must label the
specimen properly (patient name, date of birth, date, time of
collection and phlebotomist initials) in the presence of the
patient to assure correct specimen labeling. The position sometimes
requires getting multiple sticks at one time and can be a fast
paced, stressful and a multitasking job. Must have good
communication skills. Must have excellent customer service when
dealing with patients and/or visitors and must show a caring and
giving attitude and know that the care of the patient is the most
important job. Must be able to work individually, but also as a
team with the staff from within and outside of the facility.The
Phlebotomist will also be responsible for clerical duties within
the department. He/she must always keep hospital and patient
information confidential at all times.POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma, GED, or validation of higher level
education such as technical college, associate, bachelor, or
masters degree. Diploma or transcripts will be required upon
hire.Experience: Some Phlebotomy experience required. 2 years of
laboratory experience in a hospital setting
preferred.Licenses/Certificates: None required. Certification as a
phlebotomist preferred. This position is for a 7p - 3a schedule -
rotation weekends and holidays. Shift differentials apply.by
